The Monster A Go-Go episode of MST3K has one of my favorite invention exchanges and shorts (Circus on Ice!) and the Gypsy, “I don’t get you,” scene is one of the best things ever. Yet, I realized a little while back that I had never actually watched the entire episode. I had started it dozens of times but somehow never made it all the way through. So, I had never seen this.
I finally got to watch the episode in its entirety today. And, of course, I had been missing something beautiful and perfect and life-affirming. Okay, they reference the song “Timothy” by The Buoys. To understand why this matters to me you must understand that as a child I would spend HOURS at my grandmother’s house holed up in a wood-paneled room with plush red carpet, drawing and listening to “Timothy” on 45 OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. It was my favorite song. I would try to tell my friends at school about it and no one ever knew what the hell I was going on about because they were all listening to Ace of Base or something and for reasons I’ve never been able to understand not everyone is fascinated with cannibalism and thus aren’t that into one-hit wonders from the early ’70s concerning the subject. I still mention it to people from time to time just to watch their eyes glaze over because no one cares (except for my mom. I found it in her record collection after all.) But anyway, so here it is, referenced on my favorite show, and now everything makes sense and I believe I’ll go outside into the world to see what else it has in store for me (but not really because it’s cold out there.)
